Kundasang War Memorial Park

Kundasang Town is a town of Vegitable Market whereby this town is really busy from 6.ooam till 6.00pm. Kundasang is located about 96km from Kota Kinabalu City. Mode of transportation is by land and it really easy to get transportation from Ranau or from Kota Kinabalu. Kundasang Sabah is sourround by many Hotel and Backpaking such as Perkasa Hotel, Zen Garden and many more. The weather is good and you will find it whorty if you stay one night at Kundasang,Ranau Sabah. 

A must-visit in Kundasang is the Kundasang War Memorial. Established in 1962, this was one of the first memorials to commemorate the brave Australian and British Prisoners of War who died in Sandakan and during the infamous death marches to Ranau during World War II. The memorial also remembers the people of North Borneo who risked their lives to help the POWs.

The Memorial is made up of four beautiful gardens - the Australian Garden, the English Garden, the Borneo Garden and the Contemplation Garden and Pool - to represent the different nationalities. With its towering pine trees and blooming roses, a walk in the gardens is reminiscent to that of a stroll in a quaint English garden. The scent of roses lingers in the air and the serene atmosphere makes the Kundasang War Memorial an ideal place to contemplate and remember the heroes of the war. Visitors can also opt to view a brief video on the history of the Sandakan Death March.

Getting There

Kundasang is located 96km, about 2 hrs driving from Kota Kinabalu and only 10 minutes driving from Kinabalu Park. Take a bus from the Jalan Padang Bus Terminal to Kundasang or Ranau for approximately RM20.00 per person. A taxi from the Ranau Taxi Stand (located beside the Merdeka Field) or from your hotel should cost around RM160.00 to RM300.00 per taxi.

Luanti Fish Village

'Tagal' Sungai Moroli, Kampung Luanti - Fish Massage Ranau.

Luanti Fish Village is Located 22km from Ranau Town. Beside this place is the main entrance to Sabah Tea Garden, which you guys can visit after you finish with this fish village. Do take a picture and please come again soon.

Kampung Luanti, Ranau located about 131 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu (2 hours and 40 minutes drive away); this fish massage ‘spa’ is managed by the Kampung Luanti JKK and lead by Mr. Jeffrin Majangki.

In the Local Kadazandusun dialect, ‘tagal’ means ‘no fishing’, and the main purpose of the ‘tagal’ is to preserve the environment as well as the ecosystem to benefit the future generation. ‘Ikan Pelian’ or Malaysian Mahseer comes from the family of Cyprinidae. These fishes are specifically trained by the villagers to perform the healing massage activities.

The fish massage is deemed to have a curative effect on those who suffers from psoriasis. Come to Kampung Luanti for regular fish massages and you will enjoy smoother and suppler skin - just like a baby’s bottom.

If the idea of fishes nibbling off your dead skin doesn’t thrill you, try other activities such as jungle trekking and camping. Should you intend to stay longer, Kampung Luanti is also equipped with a homestay programme to make visitors feel at home every time.

Beautiful scenery at the Luanti Fish Village. The fish is following each other and this fish is really friendly to the tourist as long as they feed the fish.

The Entrance to the River... ( Left ) You need to show your ticket first before you can go  massaging your feet at the river bank of Kg Moroli Ranau. The person in charge will check you ticket and give other to the other guy to let you in and guide you... enjoy!!!

Rule and regulation at the river bank of Luanti Fish Village. Tourist are encourage to follow the rule and regulation as long as they are staying at this recreation place. Please get an assistant if you are international tourist if you do not understand Malaysian language.

Sabah Tea

Origin of Tea

The Origin Of Tea.

The legendary origin of tea drinking has been traced back to the Chinese Emperor Chen Nung of 2737BC, who was also a scholar and herbalist, who discovered this detectable drink when he was sitting beneath a tree while his servant was boiling a pot of water. A few leaves from a tea plant (Camellia Sinensis) dropped into the pot of water, gave an excellent aroma and he found it tasted as good when sipped.

The Manufacturing Process of Sabah Tea

The conversion of green leaf from the carefully nurtured tea fields to black tea is a very specialized process to maintain the final quality of the product.

I. Harvesting

The tea leaves and a bud are selectively harvested by using shears or mechanized cutter by tea harvesters.

II. Withering

The initial stage of processing, where the freshly cut shoots are spread evenly in special racks, and conditioned air flow through and around the leaf to absorb the moisture and concentrate the juices in the leaf.

III. Rolling

The withered leaf is passed through machines which twist and squeeze the juices to the surface of the leaf.

IV. Fermentation

This is an oxidization process where the tea juice in the presence of air oxidizes. The period of fermentation varies depending on the external conditions and there is a distinct change in colour and aroma. Fermentation is essential for the teas to be palatable.

V. Drying (Firing)

Fermented teas are transferred to drying machines (oven) which remove the moisture and arrest fermentation. The teas from a coppery brown become black in colour after this process.

VI. Sorting (Grading)

The final stage of the manufacturing process is the sorting of the tea particles to different grades according to sizes and shapes for identification by various specialists involved in tasting, buying and exporting of the tea.

Despatching

The graded teas will finally leave the factory either packed in the familiar tea chests or aluminum lined paper sacks or in different forms of consumer pack.

Tea Grades From Sabah Tea

Broken Orange Pekoe (BOP)

It is a small grade of tea with good liquoring properties.

Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings (BOPF)

It is a smaller tea with strong liquoring properties.

Fannings (Fngs)

It consists of tiny particles with strong liquors and often used in tea bags.

Dust (D)

It is the smallest of the grades with liquors, thicker and stronger than BOPF. It can be further graded into Dust 1, Dust 2 and etc depending on the particle sizes.

About Us

Sabah Tea Plantation, nestled into the lush tropical wilderness of Malaysia’s first ever World Heritage Site, Mount Kinabalu, sits on a 6,200-acre land at 2,272 feet above sea level.

It is surrounded by the world’s oldest rainforest of about 130 million years. Sabah Tea Plantation is the largest single commercial tea plantation in Borneo with approximated area of 1,000 acres endowed with an interesting plant and agriculture resources, Camellia Sinensis. It is also one of the very few tea plantations in the world that certified to produce organic tea.

Company Background

In the year 1976, the state government of Sabah had decided to alienate a total of 6,200 acres of land in Kampung Nalapak to Koperasi Desa (KPD). Sabah Tea Sdn Bhd was then incorporated on April 26, 1978 as a subsidiary of KPD to operate and manage the tea plantation. The Honorable Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad official opened the Sabah Tea Plantation on February 19, 1984. 

In the year 1987, the management of Sabah Tea had decided to form a joint-venture with Tate & Lyle (29%), Commonwealth Development Corporation (20%) with the remaining 51% shares held by KPD. The reason as why the management decided to approach this strategy was to lighten the burden on the government and to gain intellectual property of Tate & Lyle’s tea expertise. However, in 1995, the government had decided to privatize Sabah Tea Sdn Bhd as they believe that by doing so, Sabah Tea would be able to reach greater heights and make the country proud. 

An Ipoh based company, Yee Lee Corporation Bhd, acquired the entire shares from Sabah Tea Sdn Bhd and Desa Tea Sdn Bhd in 1997. Yee Lee Corporation was incorporated in 1973 and was listed on the Main Board of The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange in 1993. They are well-diversified company with active subsidiaries covering manufacturing, distributing and selling a wide array of products both locally and internationally.

Death March

To Re-tracing the Death March Track. The track cut for the death marches soon became completely overgrown and for sixty years defied all efforts to locate it. However, in August 2005, Australian investigative writer and historian, Lynette Silver, author of the internationally acclaimed book Sandakan - A Conspiracy of Silence , and Tham Yau Kong, a multi tourism award winner, who has almost twenty-years‘ experience in the industry, combined their considerable talents to identify the path taken by the prisoners of war. After sixty years, you too can now walk in the footsteps of the Death March heroes.

Sabah Tea Adventure Race (STAR)

The 1st Sabah Tea Adventure Race 2003 is the first ever organized event in Sabah Tea Garden, Kampung Nalapak, Ranau and it will be made a yearly race with the intension of drawing initially local and eventually international participants to experience the unique local-made adventure race in which mountain biking is the key activity. It is organized by Sabah Tea Garden ~ Educational Holidays, and directed by the renowned mountain-biking specialist Mr Tham Yau Kong (TYK Adventure Borneo).

Sabah Tea 24 Hours Non-Stop Mountain Bike Race 2004

The whole idea of the event is not to determine who or which team will be able to complete the most number of laps non-stop for 24 hours but it’s a test of the individual’s physical and mental endurance. To date we have more than 10 teams signed up for this event and we are expecting another 30-50 teams to participate. Participants from all over has signed up for make this event a greater success, just to name a few, we have bikers from Labuan, Sandakan, West Malaysia, and expecting some teams coming in from Brunei as well. Apart from that, this event will also be a great opportunity for mountain bikers to gather and interact whilst sharing experiences.
